What Is Singles’ Day?
The unofficial holiday — mainly celebrated in China and similar to Amazon’s Prime Day in the U.S. — began in the early ’90s as the antithesis of Valentine’s Day. It is always celebrated on November 11 due to the series of ones in the 11/11 date, chosen to represent single people.
Initially established as a day for singles to rejoice in their non-coupledom, celebrate, and meet up with one another, China’s Alibaba capitalized on its appeal. The day has now turned into a full-blown shopping event retailers have caught on and begun offering major in-store and online discounts.
With its exponential growth over the years, the day has become the biggest shopping holiday in the world. According to Tech Radar, yes, even larger than both Black Friday deals and Cyber Monday deals combined.
