While Thanksgiving and Christmas were naturally stressful for many people following the election last November, we’d have thought that the anxiety might have subsided by now. Instead of dissipating, the stress may be settling permanently in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. Harper’s Bazaar reports that there is a surge in people seeking Botox treatments.

At the time of the inauguration, Google searches for Botox reached a 12-year high. A spokesperson for, a site dedicated to cosmetic surgery and treatment reviews, says searches for Botox have spiked 4% in the last three months alone.

So who’s to blame– or thank — for the booming Botox business?

“While there’s always a huge demand for Botox in our nation’s Capitol, I do believe that there’s been an uptick in the number of people requesting Botox to help them deal with the recent change in administration, says Washington doctor, Tina S. Alster. “So many people have told me that they wake up in the morning with frown lines because they are having bad dreams about all of the ‘alternative facts’ with which they are bombarded.”

Other dermatologists around the country have noticed more political discussions in their waiting rooms. “I have had at least two women come in saying that worrying about the political fate of our country has taken a toll on their faces, and they realized that they were overdue for their Botox,” says Dr. Joshua Zeichner of Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Aside from eliminating stress-induces wrinkles, Botox injections also alleviate tension headaches and migraines. That could be a good reason to seek the treatment, but Dr. Whitney Bowe of New York quips, “I’ve definitely heard more comments lately that staying away from the commentary on Facebook for a few days helps alleviate their tension headaches, too.”
