The Best Wedding Movies of All Time

There’s a lot that goes into a wedding – family drama, love, anxiety, drinking, celebration, and more drinking – and it all makes for a great movie. For decades, filmmakers from Eddie Murphy to Tim Burton have been showing us all the ups, downs, and side-splitting laughs that inevitably accompany a wedding.

However, there are a handful of stand-out films that take the (white) cake as the best wedding movies of all time. Read on to see if your favorites made the cut.

1. Father Of The Bride

The 1991 version of Father of the Bride takes the classic story of an overprotective father struggling to let his dear daughter get married, and updates it with Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, and Martin Short.

Like all the best 90s movies, there are plenty of laughs, embarrassing situations, and heartfelt moments for everyone.

2. The Wedding Singer

In The Wedding Singer, Adam Sandler plays Robbie Heart, a romantic who’s constantly reminded of how great weddings are because he’s a wedding singer. Things get really bad for Robbie when his fiance ditches him at the altar.

Of course, Robbie does end up meeting another girl, but there’s a problem: she’s engaged, and she wants Robbie to help plan her wedding.

3. Runaway Bride

Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) has a habit of leaving hopeful grooms at the altar. She’s dubbed “the runaway bride” by Ike Graham (Richard Gere), a big-time journalist who’s fascinated by Maggie’s string of failed weddings. When he hears that she’s engaged yet again, he races to her small town to write a tell-all story about “the runaway bride.” However, he soon realizes how easy it is to fall in love with Maggie Carpenter.

4. Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids is one of our favorite comedies of the past decade. It cemented a slew of actresses, including Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Melissa McCarthy, as some of the funniest ladies ever.

The movie begins when struggling single Annie (Kristen Wiig) is asked to be the maid of honor at her best friend’s wedding. Annie gets nervous when she meets picture-perfect Helen, who seems to threaten her spot as bestie of the bride.

5. Wedding Crashers

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play Jeremy and John, two divorce mediators who regularly crash weddings for the free drinks and romantically vulnerable women who will go home with them.

Getting tired of small-beans weddings, the two decide to crash a more high-profile event. They get their opportunity when the Secretary of the Treasury, William Cleary (Christopher Walken), is throwing an exclusive wedding for his daughter. At the wedding, the duo’s lifestyle is threatened when John falls for one of the bridesmaids, Claire (Rachel McAdams).

Toula (Nia Vardalos) is 30 and unmarried, which makes her large, traditional Greek family very worried. But when she finally falls for a guy named Ian Miller (John Corbett), her family isn’t relieved because there’s still a problem – he’s not Greek.

7. My Best Friend’s Wedding

Best friends Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) and Michael O’Neal (Dermot Mulroney) had a deal: if they were both unmarried by the age of 28, they would marry each other. Four days before her 28th birthday, Julianne is ready to marry Michael… until he announces that he’s engaged. And now that Michael is marrying another woman, Julianne realizes that she really wants to be his wife.

9. Corpse Bride

One of the movies that cemented Tim Burton as a master filmmaker was Corpse Bride in 2005.

The stop-motion animated movie stars Johnny Depp as anxious groom Victor. He’s set to marry Victoria, who he’s never met before, but he’s starting to fall for her anyway. But before the wedding, he’s accidentally dragged into the land of the dead by Emily the corpse bride.

10. Coming To America

When African prince and soon-to-be king Akeem (Eddie Murphy) decides to travel to New York in search of a bride, his sidekick, Semmi (Arsenio Hall), asks where they will find a bride suitable for a king. They look at the map, and the answer is right there: Queens!

Coming to America is a comedy classic, and a must-watch for any fan of Eddie Murphy. The concept is so simple – an outrageously wealthy, completely naive African prince comes to New York – but Murphy and the rest of the cast find more jokes than you can count.
