Are you looking for a fun alternative to cornhole, horseshoes, lawn darts, or the other usual lawn games? It’s time to give KanJam a try. Like frisbee, KanJam involves throwing a flying disc, but KanJam kicks the fun up a notch. Instead of simply tossing the disc to a partner, you need to get the disc near—or into—a nearby can. You don’t need perfect aim, though; your partner actually stands beside the can and helps direct the disc.
We’re here to explain just how fun KanJam can be and why it might be the perfect outdoor game for your next barbecue or picnic.
What Is KanJam?
KanJam is usually played with two teams of two players each. Two cans are set up opposite one another at a distance of 50 feet. The thrower from the first team stands behind one can while his teammate, the deflector, stands beside the opposite can. The thrower tosses the disc, aiming for the opening in the can opposite him. The deflector moves about to help deflect the disc so it either hits the can, goes in through the top opening, or goes through the slot at the front of the can. Each teammate takes a turn throwing and deflecting the disc. The play then passes to the other team.
If the deflector maneuvers the can so the disc hits it, the team scores one point. If the disc hits the can without the help of the deflector, the team scores two points. If the disc goes through the top of the can with the help of the deflector, the team scores three points. If the disc goes through the slot at the front of the can, it’s an instant win and the game is over. Otherwise, the first team to score 21 points is the winner.
There’s one catch to the scoring: If you go over 21 points, the points from your throw are subtracted from your score. For example, if you’re at 19 points and the disc is deflected into the can, three points are subtracted from your score, so you only have 16 points.
What Do I Need To Play KanJam?
You don’t need much equipment to play KanJam. A typical game set includes a KanJam disc and two durable, lightweight cans which collapse for easy storage and portability. Any flying disc or frisbee could technically work, but official KanJam discs work best—and these discs are the only option allowed for official KanJam competitions. The reason: The lightweight KanJam disc weighs just 168 grams, making it easier to throw and deflect.
You can find a wide range of KanJam game sets that include all the key gear. If you want to play at night, go with a set that features a glow-in-the-dark disc and/or translucent cans designed to hold LED lights for illumination. For indoor KanJam, we suggest a mini game set that doesn’t require as much space to set up. You can even find themed KanJam games sets, including those with the logo of your favorite MLB team.
Why Should I Play KanJam?
KanJam is fun regardless of your age and skill level. You don’t have to be a top-notch athlete to throw the disc at the can, and since you have a partner to deflect it toward or into the can, you don’t even have to have perfect aim. If you’re playing with kids, you can move the cans closer together to make it a little easier. A distance of 16 feet usually works well.
Because the cans and disc for KanJam are lightweight and collapsible, they’re also highly portable. You can easily take this game to the beach, park, campsite, or your favorite tailgating location. And if you’re not in the mood for competition, you don’t even have to keep score—you and your pals can just have fun trying to get the disc into the goal.
